HEPA Air Purifier Can Combat Allergies and Asthma

Keeping weather extremes and drafts out of your home helps you save money by lowering your heating and air conditioning costs. But on the downside, keeping air trapped in your air-tight home causes problems with an increase in allergens and possible toxic contaminants. HEPA air purifier systems are an efficient and cost effective way to get rid of such indoor air pollution.

The fact is that allergens, contaminants and toxins are being trapped inside your home. Because most Americans now spend upwards of 90 percent of they day locked inside homes and offices, there has never been a greater need for good, effective air cleaners. To help protect and restore health, the HEPA air cleaners are among those favored by experts.

A HEPA air purifier is the standard against which air purification systems are measured. HEPA air filtration systems were developed and designed originally by the Atomic Energy Commission, an agency of the U.S. government, for the purpose of capturing radioactive dust particles. A HEPA air filter is capable of removing a minimum of 99.97% of all airborne particles down to the size of 0.3 microns. These specifications are part of what strictly defines a HEPA filter and separates HEPA from other types of air filtration systems.

Because of these standards, HEPA air purifier filters only allow minute particles to pass through them while containing the vast majority of particulates in the environment.

Common allergens such as animal dander, dust mite feces, pollen and dust are trapped in the filter, removing these pollutants from the air. It keeps you from inhaling them with every breath you take in an air-tight, energy efficient home or office. One of the side benefits to using HEPA filtration in your home is that it also reduces the dusting and vacuuming required to keep your home clean. Since much of the particulate is filtered out, it does not have an opportunity to cover your furniture and flooring.

One drawback to employing a HEPA air purifier in your home is that the filter does have to be periodically changed in order for the unit or system to work properly and continue the most effective level of filtration and cleansing of the air. Because these filters must be changed, it is important to consider the cost of replacement filters when you are buying a filtration unit. Sometimes less expensive air purifiers end up having the more expensive filters, so compare filter cost at the same time you are doing your comparison shopping for your air filter.

The biggest advantage to purchasing a HEPA air purifier is that if the brand you choose carries the HEPA certification, you are assured that it meets the standards as set by the U.S. government. If it is labeled a HEPA filter, you will know that it is a filter that will work well and be effective in grabbing the pollutants out of your air.

In air purification and filtering, size does matter. The more HEPA material that is used in the construction of the filter, the better the ability to remove pollutants from the air. The type and amount of material used and the quality of the construction will determine the effectiveness of the HEPA air purifier, and will also have direct bearing on the cost of filters needed for replacement.
